Biofeedback Training
According to the US Food and Drug Administration (adopted by treaty in North, South and Central America) the contraindications for biofeedback and neurofeedback include:
- The inability to comprehend the purpose of biofeedback.
This includes people who are unable to pay attention to the biofeedback sounds, lights, displays or other feedback for any reason. This also includes people under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Panic or extreme anxiety regarding the instrumentation or biofeedback itself.
This includes people with psychological disorders, and people with an emotional or anxiety reaction to biofeedback equipment or training for any reason.
- Seizures or a propensity for having seizures. (Neurofeedback only.)
The research of Barry Sterman and the Othmers indicates that in the hands of a qualified neurofeedback professional, seizure activity may be reduced or eliminated. But because of the FDA contraindication, only licensed therapists are advised to supervise or conduct neurotherapy on seizure patients if allowed by their scope of practice.

A Disclaimer Regarding Changing Regulations Regarding Biomedical Device Informed Consent
Quantum Electro Dynamic Biofeedback (QEDBF) represents biofeedback with a safety loop, and was pioneered as the QXCI, then EPFX and now the SCIO models as a Class II Medical Device, licenced for use in USA since 1989, along with Europe, South Africa, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia and Israel, as well as in Canada since July 2006. QEDBF is deemed safe for use worldwide, due to regulatory changes, however, it is currently not licensed for importation to Canada since February 2009 pending further clinical efficacy studies. Therefore, patients should also acknowledge that they have discussed with their Health Care Practitioner the fact that the scientific literature with respect to the efficacy and accuracy of the quantum Biofeedback with EPFX is such that many health practitioners would consider it to be experimental in nature. Notably, no adverse events causing morbidity or mortality have been reported anywhere in the world after millions of client interactions and uses. International and Canadian efficacy studies have subsequently been done, and further regulatory process for approval is now underway.
