All biofeedback devices are intended for the purpose of relaxation and muscle re-education. I am a biofeedback professional and I train people with biofeedback to manage their stress and pain through relaxation.

Healthcare providers licensed to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or disorder may use biofeedback devices for any purpose permitted by their license.

Contraindications for
Biofeedback Training

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (adopted by treaty in North, South and Central America) the contraindications for biofeedback and neurofeedback include:

The inability to comprehend the purpose of biofeedback.

This includes people who are unable to pay attention to the biofeedback sounds, lights, displays or other feedback for any reason. This also includes people under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Panic or extreme anxiety regarding the instrumentation or biofeedback itself.

This includes people with psychological disorders, and people with an emotional or anxiety reaction to biofeedback equipment or training for any reason.
Seizures or a propensity for having seizures. (Neurofeedback only.)

The research of Barry Sterman and the Othmers indicates that in the hands of a qualified neurofeedback professional, seizure activity may be reduced or eliminated. But because of the FDA contraindication, only licensed therapists are advised to supervise or conduct neurotherapy on seizure patients if allowed by their scope of practice.
